Hyderabad: A woman with dengue developed multiple complications that led to an emergency surgery to save her. The doctors at KIMS performed the surgery after her condition worsened at a smaller hospital.
The incident showed that, during this dengue season, if the fever is not monitored carefully, it can lead to severe complications.
Consultant Uro-Gynecologist Dr N Bindupriya provided details about the case: āA 37-year-old woman from the city came to us with dengue fever and severe abdominal pain. She was already in shock. We had to immediately administer ten units of blood and platelets to stabilise her. Despite these measures, her abdominal pain persisted, prompting an ultrasound & CT scan. It revealed a ruptured ovarian cyst causing significant internal bleeding.ā
āWe had to perform an emergency laparoscopic surgery. We found four litres of blood in her abdomen, all leaked from the ruptured cyst. Itās noteworthy that some dengue patients experience internal bleeding. Dengue presents with various symptoms, including bleeding. Identifying and treating it timely is crucial to avoid life-threatening situations. In this case, we successfully performed surgery, removed the cyst, and cleared the internal bleeding. The surgery stopped the bleeding and, with the dengue under control, she fully recovered,ā the doctor said.
General Physician Dr Shivaraju Team, general surgeon Dr MBV Prasad team, MICU team doctor Dr Pavan, the anaesthesia team, and emergency doctors worked tirelessly on this surgery. Having all these specialists available is vital in such critical situations. Thanks to the collective effort, we saved a woman who was on the brink of a life-threatening condition, explained Dr Bindupriya.
