Hyderabad: Supplements are health substitutes that can be taken orally to add to or supplement the diet. They contain vitamins, minerals, amino acids, probiotics, enzymes, herbs and other essential minerals. Supplements can be prescribed by doctors to address deficiencies or improve the overall well-being of individuals.

But, many buy supplements over the counter or without a prescription, posing potential health risks due to side effects, misdiagnosis, drug interactions and antibiotic resistance. Self-medication is highly prevalent thanks to the easy availability, cost-effectiveness and lack of awareness.

Supplements should not be taken without the advice or consultation with experts, as this could lead to serious health consequences.

Risks of unprescribed supplement use

In the modern, fast-paced world, the allure of a quick fix, whether for fitness, energy or mental focus, has led many to reach for over-the-counter supplements.

Dr Srikrishna R Boddu, consultant general physician, Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar, said, ā€œPromoted by influencers and easily available online, these products often promise transformative results without the ā€˜hassle’ of a doctor’s visit. But is it worth the risk?ā€

Under the illusion of safety

According to Dr Srikrishna, supplements are frequently marketed as ā€˜natural’ or ā€˜herbal,’ creating the false impression that they’re always safe. In reality, natural does not mean harmless.

He explained the detrimental effects of the ingredients, which can

- Interact negatively with prescription medications

- Trigger allergic reactions

- Overload the body with certain vitamins or minerals

Dangers of self-medication

Taking supplements without medical advice can lead to liver or kidney strain, hormonal imbalances, increased heart rate or blood pressure, long-term complications that outweigh short-term benefits

ā€œJust because a product worked for someone online doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone. Our bodies are complex, and what helps one person might harm another,ā€ Dr Srikrishna said.

Seeking professional guidance is essential

Doctors can understand and analyse the unique medical history, metabolism and goals of the individuals and hence consulting a professional is essential to avoid the detrimental effects of non-prescribed medicines.

Consulting an expert can ensure safe and effective use of supplements, accurate dosage and duration and monitoring for side effects or changes in the due course.

Dr Srikrishna said, ā€œRather than chasing shortcuts, focus on the fundamentals, which include a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep and periodic health check-ups. Supplements can be beneficial but only when used wisely and under guidance. Your health deserves more than guesswork.ā€
