Hyderabad: As many as 40 procedures of corneal neurotisation, a microsurgical technique to restore sensation in the cornea, have been performed at LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) since 2019.

This microsurgical technique has been performed with a high surgical success rate in Hyderabad.

Corneal neurotisation offers a restorative, long-term solution for neurotrophic keratitis, a condition that was previously only managed with palliative care.

What is corneal neurotisation?

This specialised surgery is for patients with a loss of corneal nerve supply due to trauma, congenital issues or nerve damage from neurosurgery.

The loss of sensation prevents the eye from detecting injury, impacting natural reflexes like blinking and tearing. The procedure involves transferring healthy sensory nerves from the forehead or leg and attaching them to the cornea.

Over several months, these new nerves grow into the cornea, helping to restore natural eye functions and protect vision.

Unique approach

Multidisciplinary expertise: LVPEI brings together a rare combination of specialists, including corneal specialists, neurosurgeons, oculoplastic surgeons and others, all under one roof.

Volume and success: The institute has performed more corneal neurotisation surgeries than any other centre in India, with success rates that exceed global norms.

LVPEI uses advanced microsurgical instruments, intraoperative nerve detectors, and high-resolution neural imaging to support these complex procedures.

Clinical experience: The institute has experience with both pediatric and adult cases, including congenital and complex acquired conditions.

Through workshops and training, LVPEI is committed to sharing its expertise to help other centres adopt these high standards of care.

Who needs this surgery?

Patients who may benefit from this surgery include those with:

- Post-neurosurgical nerve injuries (e.g., after a tumour excision).

- Severe trauma to the eye.

- Congenital corneal anaesthesia

- Infections, such as herpes zoster (shingles).

Improved eye health

Most patients show significant improvements in tear film stability, corneal clarity, and overall eye surface health.

The need for intensive lubricants and other surface-support therapies has been reduced or eliminated in many cases.
