Hyderabad: Leprosy, a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, affects the skin, nerves, and other tissues, often leading to severe disabilities if left untreated.

Early detection plays a critical role in reducing the diseaseā€™s impact, preventing complications, and improving the quality of life for patients. High-resolution ultrasound (HRUS) has emerged as a valuable tool for identifying nerve involvement in the early stages of leprosy, enabling timely medical intervention.

Training Program at Nepal Leprosy Trust

In a step toward enhancing early detection capabilities, Dr. Suman Jain, Chief Research Medical Officer (CMRO) of the Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society (TSCS), Hyderabad, and Dr. Sujai Suneetha conducted an advanced four-day training session at the Nepal Leprosy Trust in Lalgadh, Nepal. The program focused on training medical professionals in HRUS techniques for leprosy diagnosis.

Hands-On Instruction for Local Medical Staff

The training was designed to empower the Nepal Leprosy Trust staff with advanced diagnostic skills. Participants, including Dr. Sofia, Mr. Roshan Lal, and Mr. Shyam, were introduced to the latest advancements in nerve ultrasound techniques. They received hands-on instruction to improve their ability to identify leprosy at its earliest stages.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Jain stated, ā€œIt is a privilege to be part of this initiative, which will significantly strengthen the diagnostic capacity of the Nepal Leprosy Trust. By equipping local medical professionals with the skills to detect leprosy early through HRUS, we can ensure better care and improved quality of life for affected individuals.ā€

Expertise in Nerve Ultrasound

Dr. Suman Jain, a leading authority in nerve ultrasound for leprosy, brought her vast knowledge and experience to the training. Her contributions to the field have been widely recognized through numerous publications in national and international journals.

Improved Disease Management

The training program is expected to enhance the Nepal Leprosy Trustā€™s ability to diagnose and manage leprosy cases more effectively. By leveraging advanced diagnostic techniques, healthcare providers can ensure timely interventions, minimize complications, and reduce the overall burden of the disease in Nepal.
