Jeevandan: Telangana tops organ donations in India, performs 725 transplant surgeries in 2024
New Delhi: Telangana has ranked first in the organ donations in India. Under Jeevandan, Telangana donated the highest number of organs, according to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation.
In 2024, Telangana collected organs from 188 brain-dead donors and successfully performed 725 organ transplant surgeries. The Jeevandan team received the award from Union Health Minister JP Nadda.
The national average for organ donation is 0.8 per ten lakh population, while Telangana has 4.88 per ten lakh population.
Background on Organ Donation:
Organ donation is a life-saving medical procedure where healthy organs and tissues from one individual (the donor) are transplanted into another individual (the recipient) whose organs are failing due to disease or injury.
Common organs that can be donated include kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, and intestines. Tissues such as corneas, skin, bone, and heart valves can also be donated. Organ donation can occur from living donors (e.g., a kidney or part of a liver) or deceased donors. Deceased organ donation typically occurs when a person has been declared brain dead, meaning all brain functions have permanently ceased, even though their heart may still be beating with mechanical support. This critical medical intervention offers a second chance at life for thousands of patients worldwide suffering from end-stage organ failure.
Jeevandan program of Telangana
"The Jeevandan program was launched in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh in 2012 to save the lives of individuals with organ failure. The program is to ensure that organs reach all those in need, irrespective of their financial status," said Damodar Rajanarasimha, Telangana Health Minister.
The Minister revealed that in 2024, Telangana collected organs from 188 brain-dead donors and successfully performed 725 organ transplant surgeries, saving many lives. He appealed to the public to come forward and donate organs in cases of brain death, preventing them from going to waste. Furthermore, the Minister affirmed that organ transplant surgeries are being provided free of cost under the Arogyasri scheme, making these life-saving procedures accessible to all sections of society.
