Hyderabad: A 52-year-old woman from Khammam district successfully underwent the first-ever Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) surgery in East Hyderabad.

She was suffering from Pseudomyxoma Peritonei, a rare form of cancer that affects only one in a million individuals, and the surgery offers hope for patients with advanced cancer conditions.

Patientā€™s journey

The patient, Nayini Lalitha, was experiencing symptoms including abdominal distension, breathlessness and weight loss for the past four months.

Lalithaā€™s family consulted multiple hospitals in Khammam and Hyderabad, but the advanced stage of her disease made treatment both complicated and costly.

They approached Durgabai Deshmukh Renova Cancer Centre, where the medical team, led by Dr U Azad Chandrashekhar, medical director and senior surgical oncologist, took on the challenge of performing the HIPEC surgery. The procedure was successful and Lalitha made a full recovery within a week, receiving comprehensive post-operative care.

ā€œWe are incredibly proud to have successfully performed the complex HIPEC surgery, offering renewed hope for patients with rare and challenging cancers,ā€ said Dr Chandrashekhar. ā€œOur dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and support staff worked tirelessly to ensure the best possible outcome for Lalitha, and we are delighted with her swift recovery.ā€

Complex procedure offers renewed hope

The HIPEC procedure, known for its complexity, involves cytoreductive surgery followed by heated chemotherapy administered directly into the abdomen.

In Lalithaā€™s case, the surgery lasted for 10-12 hours and included Peritonectomy, Cholecystectomy, Gastrectomy, Sphincterotomy, Jejunal Resection, Total Colectomy, Gastrojejunostomy, Ileorectal Anastomosis and HIPEC. The procedure aimed to remove visible tumours and target residual cancer cells with heated chemotherapy, which can improve long-term outcomes.

Importance of affordable advanced medical care

Ravindranath Garaga, COO of Renova Group of Hospitals, emphasised the importance of providing advanced medical care at affordable prices. ā€œThis achievement exemplifies our mission to make advanced healthcare accessible to everyone,ā€ he stated.

The surgical team included Dr Samanth, consultant anesthesiologist, Dr Ravikumar Reddy, consultant surgical oncologist, Dr Ullas, consultant surgical oncologist, and Dr Rakesh Kumar, consultant surgical oncologist. The team expressed their pride in pioneering the HIPEC surgery in East Hyderabad and stressed the need for early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment in managing rare cancers like Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

Lalithaā€™s family expressed their gratitude to the medical team, particularly Dr Chandrashekhar, for their expertise and support throughout her treatment. The successful surgery marks a milestone in cancer care for East Hyderabad, showcasing the potential of HIPEC surgery in treating rare cancers and offering hope to patients with otherwise limited options.

This surgery is expected to pave the way for more advanced cancer treatments in the region, ensuring that complex procedures remain accessible and affordable.
