Charan, a 10-year-old boy from Yemmiganur, experienced initial symptoms of swelling, high blood pressure, and blood in his urine.
Despite consulting multiple doctors in Yemmiganur and Kurnool, Charan's condition did not improve. Seeking specialized care, he turned to KIMS Hospital where Nephrologist Dr. K Anantha Rao conducted a comprehensive evaluation.
Dr. Anantha Rao explained, "Testing revealed both nephrotic and nephritic syndromes, with significant protein and blood loss in urine. A kidney biopsy, including electron microscopy, identified Dense Deposit Disease. Further tests pinpointed a genetic defect, leading to the initiation of immunosuppression treatment with a positive response."
Dense Deposit Disease is an exceedingly rare condition, affecting only one in a lakh population.
Dr. Anantha Rao highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, stating, "This case is the first pediatric instance in Andhra Pradesh, with only nine reported cases in South India. KIMS Hospital in Kurnool now provides diagnostic facilities comparable to major metros."
Emphasizing the urgency of early intervention, Dr. Anantha Rao underscored the vital role of kidney biopsy in diagnosing such conditions.
He added, "Delay in identification may result in irreversible kidney damage, necessitating dialysis. Early biopsy and treatment can prevent kidney function loss, averting progression to the dialysis stage."
With over 500 kidney biopsies under his belt, Dr. Anantha Rao urges individuals with kidney dysfunction to consult a nephrologist promptly.
