Hyderabad: A person suffering from a rare case of Myositis Ossificans/Heterotrophic Ossification of the hip joint underwent a successful operation by the orthopaedic team of Mahavir Hospital and Research Centre. This rare condition results from the body forming an excess bone around a joint in the muscle.

What is the rare condition?

Myositis Ossificans (MO) and Heterotopic Ossification (HO) are both conditions that can cause the bone to form in soft tissue, including the hip joint. They can lead to pain, inflammation and loss of motion.

MO is a disorder that occurs when new bone cells form in a muscle after trauma, such as a broken bone or severe muscle contusion. HO is a condition that can be acquired or genetic and can occur after trauma, joint surgery, or other injuries. This results in a patient's inability to move the joint.

An orthopaedic team led by Dr Srikishen Iyengar at Mahavir Hospital and Research Centre successfully performed this complex surgery.

Dr Srikishen Iyengar, also the Medical Director of the institute, had high praise on management for giving poor patients much-needed care who could not afford such complex surgeries in the private realm.

Mahavir Hospital and Research Centre is a unit of Bhagwan Mahavir Memorial Trust.
