Hyderabad: Thyroid disorders are increasingly linked to infertility in India. The majority of women in India are suffering from thyroid disorders, which have a direct impact on their ability to conceive. As per the National Family Health Survey IV, amongst women in their reproductive age groups (15-49 years), there is a three to four-fold higher risk of having thyroid disorders. Hence, it is crucial to understand how these ailments affect our fertility and how to mitigate them. Fortunately, the majority of healthcare professionals have created awareness across all parts of India to curb this growing concern. Before we discuss how to mitigate thyroid-related conditions, let us learn about the importance of thyroid function for fertility.
Located at the front of the neck, the thyroid gland produces three hormones: thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroxine (T4). These hormones control important biological functions such as metabolism, mood, and fertility. However, with rapid lifestyle changes, the majority of people are suffering from thyroid-related conditionsāhypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
Insufficient production of thyroid hormones leads to hypothyroidism, which makes the person feel like a never-ending snooze fest, and the world seems to be moving fast-forward while they seem stuck in rewind. Mostly, they are tired.
Overproduction of thyroid hormones leads to hyperthyroidism. Now, this is another side of the coin. We can compare Hyperthyroidism to a coffee. It makes the individual go into energetic overdrive. They donāt wish to sit down, but just want to run or walk. Heart races as if itās in a 100-metre sprint, and youāre producing more sweat than ever. It leads to hand tremors, weight loss, and rapid heartbeats. And may also experience increased anxiety.
These ailments interfere with menstrual cycles and ovulation and increase the risk of miscarriages in women. In the case of men, they increase male infertility by interfering with the production and quality of sperm. Hence, it is crucial to keep a check on your thyroid production.
The ideal TSH level before and during pregnancy is less than 2-5 mIU/L. For those who are suffering from hypothyroidism, doctors prescribe the use of levothyroxine. In case of hyperthyroidism, propylthiouracil (PTU) or methimazole is prescribed to treat the ailment.
Apart from medications, one can maintain their thyroid levels by engaging in a healthy lifestyle. Consume a rich diet that includes adequate amounts of iodine, zinc, and selenium to support and maintain proper hormone production. Reduce the intake of goitrogens, as they interfere with thyroid function. Goitrogens are found in foods such as kale, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. Engage in regular moderate exercise to improve general health, and aim for seven to eight hours of sleep. Engage in stress reduction activities such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises. Reduce your exposure to endocrine disruptors such as pesticides and BPA, which are present in some personal care products.
Furthermore, if you are suffering from thyroid issues and are planning to get pregnant, it is crucial to consult a gynecologist and endocrinologist. Proper management and early diagnosis can help guarantee a healthy pregnancy and enhance fertility results.
