By Newsmeter Network Published on 16 Dec 2021 12:30 PM GMTHyderabad: Doctors of a city hospital removed 156 kidney stones from a 50-year-old patient. This is the highest number of kidney stones ever removed from a patient in India.
The kidney stones were removed through laparoscopy and endoscopy by the doctors of Preeti Urology and Kidney Hospital in Hyderabad.
The patient, Basavaraj Madiwalar, is a school teacher from Hubli. He developed sudden pain near his abdomen. A screening revealed the presence of a large cluster of kidney stones.
Mr. Madiwalar also had an ectopic kidney as it was located near his abdomen instead of its normal position in the urinary tract. Though the presence of the kidney in an abnormal location was not the cause of the problem, removing stones from the kidney located abnormally was a challenge, said the doctors who treated him.
Commenting on the patient, the problem, and the procedure, Dr. V. Chandra Mohan, urologist and managing director of Preeti Urology and Kidney Hospital, said, "This patient might have been developing these stones for more than two years but never experienced any symptoms in the past. However, a sudden occurrence of pain forced him to undergo all necessary tests which revealed the presence of a large cluster of renal stones in the kidney."
He added, "After assessing his health condition, we decided to take a laparoscopy and endoscopy route to extract the stones instead of resorting to major surgery. With meticulous planning and proper preparation, the stones were fully extracted after a procedure that lasted for three hours."
Dr. Mohan said the patient is healthy now and has returned to his regular daily routine.
