Hyderabad: A latest NCRB report revealed that men across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh outnumber women in experiencing heart attacks that lead to sudden deaths.
Accidental Deaths and Suicides India (ADSI) report for 2022, released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), sheds light on a concerning trend.
The statistics reveal that for every woman suffering a heart attack, six men are facing life-threatening heart episodes in India.
In 2022, the ADSI report recorded a staggering 28,005 sudden deaths due to heart attacks in men, compared to 4,402 in women, emphasizing the gender disparity in heart-related fatalities. The data also delves into age-specific categories, revealing that in the 30 to 45-year-old age group, 9,722 individuals succumbed to heart attacks, with 8,670 being men and 1,049 women. Similarly, in the 45 to 60 years age range, 12,290 individuals lost their lives to heart attacks, with 10,854 men and 1,436 women.
Based on the NCRB-2022 statistics, Telangana reported a total of 282 sudden heart attack deaths. They include 257 men and 27 women. In Andhra Pradesh, during the same year, there were 176 fatal heart attack cases. They include 162 men and 14 women.
Public health researchers, including the Indian Heart and Stroke Association, attribute the vulnerability of Indians to heart disease to several factors. These include genetic predisposition, metabolic deregulation, cardiomyopathy (weak heart muscle), consumption of meat, saturated fats, trans fats, junk foods, high levels of stress, and a sedentary lifestyle. The analysis underscores the need for addressing these risk factors collectively to curb the prevalence of heart attacks, especially among men.
As the statistics paint a stark picture of the gender disparity in heart-related fatalities, there is a pressing need for public health initiatives aimed at raising awareness about heart health, promoting healthier lifestyle choices, and encouraging regular health check-ups. Understanding the factors contributing to these alarming numbers is crucial in developing targeted interventions to reduce the incidence of sudden heart attacks and improve overall cardiovascular health across the nation.
