Hyderabad: As part of the Ugadi celebrations in Mauritius, world-renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr Gudaru Jagadesh was honoured with the Vishva Vaidya Divyang Bandhu Award by the Mauritian prime minister. The award was given in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to society, particularly his unwavering dedication to the welfare of persons with disabilities.

Telugu Ugadi celebrations were organised by the Mauritius Telugu Maha Sabha, where Mauritian Telugu people enthusiastically celebrated the Telugu New Year at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture in Phoenix.

The event served as a platform to preserve and promote the heritage and traditions of the Telugu people. The program began with traditional Telugu New Year rituals, including the invocation of Maa Telugu Talli, the lighting of the lamp, and a prayer to Lord Ganesha.

As part of the event, Dr Gudaru Jagadesh was honoured by the Mauritian prime minister.

For four decades, Dr Jagadesh has been dedicated to the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities and social service, earning special recognition both nationally and internationally. His tireless service has impacted the lives of many underprivileged individuals. Recognising these services, the prime minister of Mauritius, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, conferred the Viswa Vaidya Divyanga Bandhu award on Dr Gudaru Jagadesh. The Mauritian PM praised Dr Jagadeshā€™s extraordinary humanitarian spirit and dedication.

During his speech, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam highlighted that Dr Jagadesh, who hails from a humble agricultural family in Andhra Pradesh, pursued medical education at renowned medical institutions like Rangaraya Medical College in Kakinada and Manipal University in Mangalore, specialising in orthopedics and receiving advanced training in cutting-edge techniques from globally recognised institutions.

He also extended his services by conducting academic programs and free camps in the United States, Germany, UK, Italy, France, Nigeria, Kenya, Oman, Switzerland and Mauritius, and published his research in numerous national and international journals. The prime minister requested Dr Jagadesh to extend his services to Mauritius in the coming days.

In his address, the Mauritius prime minister praised the Mauritius Telugu Maha Sabhaā€™s commitment to preserving and promoting Telugu culture and recognising individuals who make a positive impact on society. He commended Dr Jagadeshā€™s dedication and service to the community, stating that his service serves as an inspiration to all.

ā€œI am delighted to receive this prestigious award. This recognition is not just for me, but for every doctor who dedicates their life to serving society. I am always ready to continue my services to ensure that everyone has access to necessary healthcare,ā€ said Dr Jagadesh

Representatives of the Mauritius Telugu Maha Sabha noted that, as the director of TTD BIRRD Trust Hospital, Dr Jagadesh led free polio surgical and screening camps across the country, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

He is head of the orthopedics department at GreenMed Hospital in Hyderabad. In his 43 years of service, he has conducted numerous camps to improve the lives of the differently-abled not only in India but also in many countries around the world, performing over 1,83,000 surgeries, enabling many to overcome disabilities. This achievement is unparalleled worldwide.

The event featured cultural performances, including classical dances, folk songs, and traditional music, reflecting the artistic heritage of the Telugu people.
