Anantapur: A 45-year-old male patient with a rare and life-threatening bowel condition was successfully operated upon at KIMS Saveera Hospital in Anantapur. The patient was suffering from acute mesenteric ischemia, a condition often compared to heart attacks and strokes due to its severity and the rapid onset of symptoms.
According to the hospital records, the patient, suffering from diffuse abdominal pain for seven days, sought treatment at multiple hospitals without relief. Upon admission to KIMS Saveera Hospital, a CECT scan revealed a high-grade intestinal obstruction with suspected bowel gangrene. Recognising the urgency, Dr N Mohammed Shahid, the hospitalās consultant surgical gastroenterologist, immediately performed the surgery.
Surgical findings
The operation revealed extensive gangrene involving approximately 300 cm of the small bowel, secondary to mesenteric ischemia. The gangrenous bowel was resected and the remaining healthy bowel was anastomosed.
The doctors said that the patient had recovered well from the surgery and was discharged in a stable condition on the seventh day, free of complications.
What is acute mesenteric ischemia?
Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is caused by a sudden decrease in blood flow through the mesenteric vessels, often due to blood clots. This leads to severe symptoms and can result in necrosis of the intestines, sepsis, and death if not treated promptly. The condition has a high mortality rate, ranging from 80-90 per cent, highlighting the critical nature of timely diagnosis and intervention.
The complexity and risk associated with AMI make this successful surgery a remarkable achievement for KIMS Saveera Hospital. Similar procedures in metropolitan hospitals often cost between Rs 5 to 7 lakhs; however, the surgery at KIMS Saveera was performed under the AROGYA Sree scheme, making it accessible and affordable for the patient.
