Protect yourself from fevers in monsoon: Safety nets against mosquitoes; drink only boiled water

Hyderabad: Telangana govt has issued health advisory to stay healthy during monsoon rains

Hyderabad: With the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, forecasting heavy rains across Telangana over the next two days, the State government has issued a general health advisory urging citizens to take precautions to safeguard against seasonal illnesses.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, the combination of lower temperatures and increased humidity can create conditions conducive to the spread of vector-borne and water-borne diseases, as well as viral infections.

Preventing vector-borne diseases

Residents have been advised to take active steps to control mosquito breeding and prevent diseases such as malaria, dengue and chikungunya.

Key precautions include:

- Using mosquito nets or screens on doors and windows

- Covering beds and cribs with mosquito nets

- Applying mosquito repellents regularly

- Preventing water stagnation in household drains

- Ensuring that septic tanks are sealed with mesh covers

- Observing a weekly ā€˜Friday Dry Day’ to eliminate stagnant water in and around homes

Guarding against water-borne infections

The advisory also highlights the risk of illnesses like acute gastroenteritis, jaundice and typhoid due to potential contamination of drinking water and poor sanitation during rains.

Recommended practices include:

- Drinking only filtered or boiled water

- Wash hands frequently, especially before and after meals

- Avoiding consumption of stale or outside food

- Preventing Airborne Infections and Viral Fevers

Citizens are encouraged to adopt hygienic behaviour to reduce the spread of airborne diseases such as influenza and viral fevers. Suggested actions include:

- Avoiding physical contact, such as handshakes, when sick or with sick individuals

- Using hand sanitisers frequently

- Sneezing or coughing into a handkerchief

- Visiting the nearest government health facility if symptoms such as cough, fever, sore throat, and body aches develop

Emergency support and medical readiness

In case of health emergencies, citizens can contact the state-run 108 Ambulance Services for immediate assistance.

Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, Dr B Ravinder Nayak, stated that the government has made ā€˜elaborate arrangements by providing special beds, IV fluids, and essential medicines at all public health facilities.’ He added that additional support, including ORS sachets and medicines, is being distributed through ANMs, ASHAs, and Anganwadi workers to ensure a timely response in case of outbreaks.

The public is urged to remain cautious, follow all safety advisories, and stay informed about further updates from official health departments as the state prepares to tackle the effects of the impending rains.
