Rare surgery on Khammam man with fractures in both shoulder joints done at Renova Hospitals

Hyderabad: Renova Century Hospitals, Banjara Hills, has performed a rare and complex orthopaedic surgery on a 62-year-old man suffering from bilateral proximal humerus fractures, a condition involving fractures in both shoulder joints.

Rare dual shoulder injury

The patient, a resident of Rotary Nagar in Khammam district, sustained serious injuries following a slip and fall incident, resulting in fractures in both shoulders. He had been experiencing intense pain, swelling, bruising and an inability to move his arms for nearly a month before seeking treatment.

After multiple consultations across hospitals in Khammam and Hyderabad, the family faced challenges in finding affordable treatment options due to the advanced stage and complexity of the case. They eventually approached Renova Century Hospitals, where a specialised orthopaedic team took charge.

Complex procedure involving dual surgical techniques

The surgery was led by Dr Himakanth Lingala, HOD and Consultant Orthopaedic Oncosurgeon, along with Dr Vijay Kumar Reddy, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Chief Trauma Surgeon, and Dr Anoop Reddy Sama, Consultant Shoulder and Sports Surgeon.

The team performed a dual-procedure surgery over a span of 6 to 8 hours. The right shoulder was treated with a Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty, a procedure where the positions of the ball and socket are reversed to improve joint stability. The left shoulder underwent Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) using a PHILOS plate to realign and stabilise the fracture.

According to the medical team, the patient responded well to the treatment and achieved full recovery within a week.
