Hyderabad: The Telangana government has decided to increase the financial aid for medical treatments currently being offered under the Aarogyasri scheme.

Against this backdrop, deputy chief minister and finance minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka issued orders on Saturday releasing Rs 497.29 crores towards the enhanced cost of treatment packages.

A decision to bring 65 more new medical treatments was also taken for treatments such as angiogram and also in ailments such as Parkinson’s disease, and spinal cord-related ailments under the Rajiv’s Aarogyasri.

Aid to 1,375 treatments increased

The deputy CM said that aid of 1,375 treatments out of the 1,672 treatments being offered under the scheme will be increased, as per the recommendation of medical experts.

Bhatti held a meeting at the Secretariat here on June 7 to consider adding new medical treatments and the revision of financial packages to the existing treatments under the free health insurance scheme.

In addition, as 98 medical treatments under Ayushman Bharat were also added to Rajiv Aarogyasri, the government will have to bear an additional expenditure of Rs 189.83 crores.

The additional burden on account of 65 new medical treatments will be Rs 158.2 crores.

In view of the above decisions – enhancement of package cost for existing treatments and addition of new treatments – deputy CM sanctioned Rs 497.29 crores in the meeting.

What is the Aarogyasri scheme and its benefits?

The Aarogyasri scheme was introduced in 2007 by the then Congress government to provide quality medical treatment to the poor.

There are 2.84 crore beneficiaries under the scheme and financial assistance up to Rs 10 lakhs for each beneficiary was being extended. The Aarogyasri scheme was implemented through 1,402 hospitals in the State and presently 1,672 medical treatments for various diseases and health problems are included under the Aarogyasri.
