Hyderabad: Telangana government has announced a 15 percent increase in stipends for house surgeons and postgraduate (PG) students.

The revision, effective immediately, applies to government medical colleges, teaching hospitals, dental colleges, and nursing institutions under the Director of Medical Education (DME).

Revised Stipend Structure

Under the revised structure, the monthly stipend for house surgeons—both medical and dental—has been increased from ₹25,906 to ₹29,792. Postgraduate students pursuing medical degrees will now receive:

₹67,032 in the first year

₹70,757 in the second year

₹74,482 in the third year

For postgraduate diploma students, stipends have been revised to:

₹67,032 in the first year

₹70,757 in the second year

The new structure also benefits students in super-speciality courses.

Extension of Staff Services

In addition to stipend revision, the state government has approved the continuation of 16,448 staff engaged under contract, outsourcing, or honorarium arrangements in the healthcare sector. These personnel will continue their services from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026.

The extended posts include:

4,772 contract-based positions

8,615 outsourcing-based positions

3,056 honorarium posts

3 multi-tasking staff across various categories

These posts cover clinical and non-clinical roles in government medical and dental colleges, nursing institutions, and teaching hospitals.

Broader Impact on Healthcare Workforce

The stipend hike and service extension also apply to associated personnel, including professors, assistant and associate professors, senior residents, nursing staff, paramedics, data entry operators (DEOs), and Class IV employees.

The statement releases said that the measure would support institutions under the DME, particularly as the state expands its medical infrastructure.

Recruitment Plans Underway

Permanent appointments for the sanctioned positions are expected in the coming year. In the interim, the government emphasized the importance of retaining trained staff and ensuring that essential medical services remain functional.

The move comes as Telangana continues to scale up its healthcare infrastructure, with new government medical colleges being operationalised across districts.
