Hyderabad: In response to a recent study conducted by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Hyderabad-based doctors stressed the importance of recognising unintentional weight loss as a potential indicator of increased cancer risk.

In the study, lead investigator Brian Wolpin, MD, MPH, underscored the need for individuals experiencing unexpected weight loss to consult a doctor promptly.

Renowned oncologist Dr Sachin Marda emphasised the significance of seeking medical evaluation when faced with unintentional weight loss.

“When a patient experiences unintentional weight loss not due to healthier behaviours, seeing your primary care doctor is appropriate,” stated Dr Marda.

He underscored the study’s aim to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy weight loss, highlighting unintentional weight loss as a potential sign of underlying cancer.

Dr Marda further emphasised the importance of distinguishing between healthy weight loss due to lifestyle changes and unhealthy weight loss associated with potential cancer. The study categorised weight loss-promoting behaviours into high, medium, and low based on participants’ changes in diet and exercise.

Weight loss as early indicator

Contrary to the assumption that weight loss primarily accompanies advanced cancer stages, the study found similar levels of weight loss before the diagnosis of both early and late-stage disease. Unintentional weight loss could serve as an early indicator, facilitating early cancer diagnosis and more effective treatment.

Dr Vijay Anand Reddy, another prominent healthcare professional in Hyderabad, echoed the sentiment, stating, “Unexpected weight loss can be a sign of an underlying health issue, including cancer. Seeking medical advice for evaluation is crucial.”

He emphasised the study’s significance in underlining the potential link between unintentional weight loss and cancer risk.

Hyderabad doctors collectively emphasised the importance of recognising unexpected weight loss and seeking timely medical evaluation.

The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute study, according to Dr Reddy, underscored the significance of unintentional weight loss as a potential indicator of cancer risk.

“Acknowledging this importance, they encourage individuals to seek medical advice promptly, contributing to earlier cancer diagnosis and improved treatment outcomes,” Dr Reddy added.
