Health experts emphasized the importance of staying vigilant and adopting preventive measures. Seasonal flu, upper respiratory tract infections, allergies, asthma, and influenza infections may exacerbate.
Dr. Mahaboob Khan, Superintendent at Government Chest Hospital, advises particular attention to individuals with co-morbid conditions like diabetes, hypertension, kidney, and heart ailments, as they are more vulnerable during this time. Vaccination against the flu is recommended for this group to reduce the risk of upper respiratory chest infections.
Asthma patients face heightened challenges during the winter season, with cold and dry air known to trigger asthma attacks. The cold air causes airways to tighten, making breathing more difficult for individuals with asthma. Long-term treatment, often involving inhalers, is crucial for managing asthma in these conditions.
Winter also tends to exacerbate allergies, leading to a 40 percent rise in cases during this season. Eczema, a skin ailment causing a dry, itchy, and red rash, can flare up during winter. Poor ventilation in closed houses encourages the growth of mold or fungi, contributing to allergic reactions.
Additionally, the resurgence of swine flu (influenza) is anticipated by health officials in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana.
High-risk groups, including pregnant women, children, and the elderly with co-morbid conditions, are advised to get their annual flu shot under medical guidance.
