Hyderabad: Indian winters, especially in dry regions, can have a noticeable impact on the skin. The cooler temperatures, dry winds, and lower humidity levels can strip away moisture, leaving the skin more vulnerable to dryness, flakiness, and irritation.

Even areas with milder winters can experience seasonal changes that require some adjustment in skincare.

Talking to NewsMeter, Hyderabad dermatologists and cosmetologists share tips for maintaining soft, hydrated skin through a more strategic approach.

Choose a Gentle, Hydrating Cleanser

Using the right cleanser is a foundation for winter skin care. Dermatologist Dr. Anvitha Reddy from Hyderabad explains, ā€œFoaming cleansers often work well in humid, warmer weather, but during winter, they can strip essential oils. Switching to a cream-based cleanser with ingredients like glycerin or ceramides can help maintain moisture.ā€

This kind of cleanser is gentler on the skin and supports its natural barrier against the drying effects of the season.

Focus on Layered Hydration

Layering hydration is essential for keeping skin supple in colder weather. Start with a serum rich in humectants like hyaluronic acid, which draws moisture into the skin. Follow with a heavier moisturizer that includes barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides or squalane.

Hyderabad cosmetologist Dr. Jamna Rai says, ā€œLayering your hydration, with a serum and thicker moisturizer, creates long-lasting protection against dryness.ā€ For extremely dry skin, a drop of facial oil can add an extra layer of moisture.

Donā€™t Skip Sunscreen

Even in winter, UV rays continue to impact the skin. Sun damage can worsen dryness and lead to premature aging.

ā€œPeople often underestimate UV exposure in winter, but sun protection remains crucial year-round,ā€ says dermatologist Dr. Reddy.

Choose an SPF 30 or higher with added hydrating ingredients to help prevent sun damage and support your skinā€™s moisture barrier.

Add a Humidifier Indoors

Indoor heating can dry out the air, reducing the skinā€™s natural hydration. Adding a humidifier at home or in the office can restore some of this lost moisture, helping skin stay balanced.

Dr. Rai explains, ā€œHumidifiers help replenish indoor moisture levels, which keeps skin more comfortable and protected.ā€

Humidifiers also benefit other dry areas, such as lips and nasal passages.

Be Gentle with Exfoliation

Exfoliating to remove dead skin cells is still important in winter, but itā€™s essential to use milder products.

Dr. Reddy suggests, ā€œIn winter, use a gentle exfoliant like lactic acid once or twice a week to avoid stripping the skinā€™s moisture.ā€

This approach helps promote cell turnover without disrupting the natural barrier, making skin smoother and more receptive to moisture.

Keep Hydrated Inside and Out

Staying hydrated is a must, even in the cooler months. Drinking enough water supports skinā€™s hydration from within, while a richer moisturizer can lock in external moisture.

Dr. Rai recommends, ā€œApply a thicker cream on damp skin after a shower to seal in hydration.ā€ This can be especially helpful in preventing moisture loss as cold air dries the skin more quickly.

Supporting Skin Through Lifestyle Choices

Healthy skin isnā€™t just about products; lifestyle habits matter, too. Eating a diet rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and hydrating foods, along with getting adequate sleep and managing stress, can all positively impact the skin.

Dr. Rai emphasizes, ā€œA well-balanced lifestyle complements a solid skincare routine, helping maintain skin health in winter.ā€

Adjusting your skincare to match the seasonal shifts in Indiaā€™s climate is essential. By following these expert-backed practices, you can protect your skin from winter dryness and keep it smooth, hydrated, and resilient all season long.
