Hyderabad: The doctors of a city hospital performed a life-saving procedure and saved the life of a nurse from Zambia who visited the KIMS Hospitals here with a serious health problem.
Dr. G. Parthasarathy, senior consultant, surgical gastroenterology, laparoscopic, and hepato-pancreaticobiliary surgery at KIMS Hospitals, provided the specifics.
The 36-year-old mother of three who works as a nurse in a hospital in Zambia (in southern Africa) underwent a hysterectomy at the hospital where she worked. Her intestines were damaged due to complications. She was taken for surgery to correct the problem, but the surgery failed. She endured seven procedures in total to repair the intestinal damage. All seven procedures failed, and she became critically ill, unable to eat or pass stool.
She was flown to Hyderabad by helicopter. During the trip, she was not provided any liquid or solid food, and a cotton pad was placed on her abdomen.
She was promptly admitted to KIMS ICU upon arrival. Sutures were placed on the damaged intestines during a seven-hour procedure. Unfortunately, because the infection had already progressed, partial intestines were removed. She was in the intensive care unit for 10 days.
Following that, additional surgery was performed to restore motion. She recovered and was finally able to eat properly. She has fully recovered her health and is now returning to her home country to reunite with her family and children.
The team of doctors who treated her are Dr. M. Sudheer, Dr. C. Naresh Kumar Reddy (HOD, anesthesiology), Dr. Ann Campos (ICU), and Dr. Pavan (ICU).
