New Delhi: The Central government has instructed mobile phone firms to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on every device manufactured or imported in India.
Designed to safeguard users, the app helps prevent phone theft, fraud calls, fake devices, and unauthorised SIM activations.
The directive applies not only to upcoming devices, but older smartphones must also receive the app through mandatory software updates.
However, Opposition parties have demanded a rollback, alleging the move promotes state surveillance.
What is the App?
Sanchar Saathi, as described by the government, is a digital security platform offering various citizen-focused features through its mobile app and web portal.
Among these is Chakshu, which enables users to report suspected cyber fraud. Such early alerts help the Department of Telecommunications stop telecom resource misuse linked to cybercrime and financial scams. It also allows users to complain about spam calls and assists in recovering lost phones.
When will this be implemented?
The Department of Telecommunications, under the Ministry of Communications, led by Jyotiraditya Scindia, has ordered manufacturers to ensure the app is pre-loaded on all smartphones within 90 days from November 28.
Manufacturers must make sure the app is visible and functional during the initial device setup. Phones already in circulation must receive the app via a software update. The notification warns that non-compliance will lead to action from the Centre.
Government data shows the platform has already helped trace over 700,000 missing phones, block 3.7 million stolen devices, and terminate 30 million fraudulent connections.
Key Features of Sanchar Saathi:
• Check IMEI validity to confirm whether a phone is genuine.
• View all mobile numbers issued in your name to detect unauthorised SIMs.
• Report a stolen or lost phone to block it from being used anywhere.
• Report spam, fraud, or suspicious calls/SMS directly.
• Identify suspicious international calls masked as Indian numbers.
How to Download
The app can be installed from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
With the new government rule, upcoming smartphones may come with Sanchar Saathi already installed. For others, users can simply search for “Sanchar Saathi” in their app store and download it free of cost.
