ICIS 2023: Hyderabad steals the show during discussions on AI and digital innovation
ICIS 2023 marked a significant milestone for India as it hosted the International Conference on Information Systems for the first time in its 43-year history

Organized by the Association for Information Systems (AIS), the ICIS attracted over 1000 participants from 45 countries, including Information Systems researchers, academics, and professionals from various sectors.
ICIS 2023 marked a significant milestone for India as it hosted the International Conference on Information Systems for the first time in its 43-year history. The conference, renowned as one of the most exclusive in the field, brought together top research papers and authors worldwide, fostering invaluable networking and research experiences.
With a focus on AI and digital innovation, the conference featured 23 research tracks covering diverse aspects, as explained by Honorary Conference Chair Rahul De, Ph.D., from the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. He stated, "ICIS 2023 boasts an array of 23 research tracks covering diverse facets of AI and digital innovation."
The conference theme, 'Rising Like a Phoenix: Reshaping Human Endeavors with Digital Technologies,' reflects a commitment to exploring the transformative potential of AI, as highlighted by Professor Rahul De, Honorary co-chair: "ICIS 2023 serves as a nexus for global thought leaders to converge and envision the future of these technologies."
Co-Chair Suprateek Sarker from the University of Virginia emphasized the global nature of the conference., "At this global conference happening for the first time in India, Hyderabad, the participants will witness the prowess of Indian IT, cultural ethos combined with an enriching series of panel discussions, papers, and insights into the latest advancements in information systems across sectors," he said.
Virpi Kristiina Tuunainen, Co-Chair from Aalto University, Finland, expressed satisfaction in bringing ICIS to India. "It is very good to have our international community and scholars from all over the world, meeting here in the high-tech city of Hyderabad," he said.
Co-Chair Souren Paul from Northern Kentucky University highlighted inclusivity as a key aspect. He said: "ICIS 2023, inclusivity reigns supreme as we gather diverse global perspectivesāwith industry participation for the first time."
ICIS sessions included the IT Leadership Forum (CIO Forum), panels, symposia, workshops, and keynote presentations, with a keynote by Dr. Bhaskar Ghosh, Chief Strategy Officer, Accenture. The conference also featured a practitioner-oriented research track aimed at bridging theory and practice.
With practical applications in focus, a dedicated track addressed the connection between theory and practice, offering insights for industry professionals and researchers alike. The conference also introduced a "paper hackathon" to facilitate new research collaborations and accelerate the publication review process for promising projects.
