Telangana gets 1st woman Governor

Hyderabad: Tamil Nadu BJP chief Tamilisai Soundararajan has been named the Governor of Telangana. She succeeds E.S.L. Narasimhan, the first Governor for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh after the state's bifurcation in 2014. Ms Soundararajan is also the first woman Governor of Telangana.

Ms Soundararajan was president of the state unit of the BJP since 2014. She held various posts in the party beginning from the South Chennai District Medical Wing Secretary in 1999. Recently she had contested the Lok Sabha elections from Tuticorin where she lost to DMK candidate Kanimozhi.

Daughter of Congress leader Kumari Anandhan, Ms Soundararajan is a doctor by profession.

When contacted Ms Soundararajan said, "Hard work is always recognised in the BJP. I have always given my best in my public life. I will give my best in my new assignment."

Who will be the next BJP chief in TN?

Ms Soundararajan's appointment has let loose a debate on who will succeed her as party chief in Tamil Nadu. Several names are doing rounds. Sources say that the right person will be chosen to strengthen the party at the grass-root level. It would be a surprise name for all, they add.
