Adilabad: Believe it out not, Adilabad MLA Jogu Ramanna celebrated his birthday by planting trees.

As part of the Green India Challenge, Adilabad MLA Jogu Ramanna planted as many as 3.5 lakh saplings in an hour to enter Wonder Book of Records on Sunday. The MLA launched a drive on a 110-acre land plot. Interestingly, July 4 was his birthday as well.

Over 30,000 TRS members participated in the one million saplings event. Founder of Green India Challenge and TRS Rajya Sabha MP J Santosh Kumar visited the district and inaugurated the programme along with the Endowments Minister A Indrakaran Reddy.

Wonder Book of Records presented an appreciation certificate to the organizers after observing the plantation drive in the Durganagar forest area. The plantation drive has surpassed the record plantation of 3.03 lakh saplings created in Turkey.

Five lakh saplings were planted through the Miyawaki model in the degenerated forest area spreading over 200 acres in Durganagar of the Adilabad (/topic/adilabad) rural region. In a span of 60 minutes, two lakh plants in Adilabad Rural Bela Mandal, 1,80,000 saplings in 45 houses in the urban region were planted. Volunteers ensured planting 1,20,000 saplings on either side of R&B road.

In the Miyawaki technique, various native species of plants are planted close to each other so that the greens receive sunlight only from the top and grow upwards than sideways. As a result, the plantation becomes approximately 30 times denser, grows 10 times faster, and becomes maintenance-free after a span of 3 years.

Green India Challenge was launched with an aim to improve green cover four years ago. Since its launch, TRS MP Santosh Kumar has roped in celebrities, politicians, environmentalists, general public alike from across the globe and has been working relentlessly towards planting saplings, adopting and conserving forests, natural resources, encouraging organic farming, creating awareness on the importance of a pollution-free environment for our next generations.
