Hyderabad: The Telangana unit of Bhartiya Janta Party has written a letter to the Election Commission of India urging it to conduct the Huzurabad by-election "as early as possible".
In the letter, the BJP said that the state government has completed almost 80 per cent vaccination in the constituency which might not lead to the spread of COVID-19 during the election. It also said that the health department had already said there will be no third wave in the near future.
The by-election will be held adhering to all safety precautions put forth by the government and the Election Commission, the BJP said, adding that the Telangana government had earlier allowed permission to conduct all activities halted due to the lockdown and said it was safe to hold the elections.
The state government is considering reopening the schools in the state in view of the decreasing number of COVID-19 cases.
The Huzurabad Assembly seat fell vacant after former Telangana health minister Eatala Rajender resigned on 12 June after he was removed from the Cabinet over land encroachment. Later, he joined the BJP and is likely to contest the upcoming Huzurabad by-election.
TRS has nominated TRS Vidyarthi Vibhagam (TRSV) president Gellu Srinivas Yadav.
Meanwhile, the BJP state president Bandi Sanjay Kumar will start his padayatra from Bhagyalaxmi Temple in the city on Saturday.
