COVID-19: Telangana govt acts tough, books 6478 for not wearing masks

Hyderabad: Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, Telangana police have gone into overdrive and registered cases against 6,478 people for not wearing facemasks.

Police have slapped a penalty of Rs 1000 on each person found not wearing a mandatory facemask.

Under Hyderabad Commissionerate, around 2,030 cases, the highest has been booked. Similarly, 670 cases were registered in Rachakonda Commissionerate and 514 cases were booked in Cyberabad.

In semi-urban commissionerates, around 938 cases, the highest, has been booked in Ramagundam followed by Warangal (218), Khammam (131), Nizamabad (70), Siddipet (9) and Karimnagar (8) cases.

Around 349 cases, the highest, has been booked in Sangareddy followed by Kamareddy (272), Suryapet (257) and Nalgonda (194) cases have been booked.

While Narayanpet police failed to register even a single case since April 5 even though Positive cases are on the rise in the district. Their counterparts in Jagtial, Wanaparthy, and JayashankarĀ­ Bhupalpally booked one case each.

Adilabad district, which borders Maharashtra, has booked only five cases.

The Telangana government has asked all the district collectors and magistrates to slap fine on those people who fail to wear a mask in public places.

Wearing masks has now been made mandatory in all public places, workspaces, and means of transport. Any deviation from the order will attract prosecution under Section 51 to 60 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and Section 188, IPC as well as other applicable laws, the order said. It is further reiterated that failure to wear a mask shall attract a penalty of Rs 1,000.

Meanwhile, Telangana reported 2,251 new Covid cases on Sunday taking the overall tally to 3,29,529 in the state.

The state reported six new deaths on April 11 taking the total death toll to 1,765. The fatality rate in the state is 0.54 per cent which is less than the national average of 1.3 per cent.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area on Sunday reported 355 new cases. The neighbouring Rangareddy district reported 200 new cases. Medchal Malkajgiri reported 258 and Sangareddy 132 new cases.

Other districts of Telangana are also seeing a surge in cases. Nizamabad on Sunday reported 244 new cases while Nirmal reported 84 cases and Jagtial reported 117 cases.
