TRS says Eatala held press meet on election day

TRS filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India against BJP candidate Eatala Rajender for holding a press meet on the day of the Huzurabad by-poll.

In its complaint, the TRS alleged that Eatala violated the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and deliberately committed a criminal offence by holding a press meet on the day of the by-poll. The complaint filed by TRS general secretary Bharat Kumar Soma said the BJP candidate had tried to influence voters during the press meet at a polling booth in Channa Badi, Kamalapur.

Mr. Soma also mentioned Mr. Rajender's wife in the complaint and alleged that she had called the TRS unjust while claiming that the BJP was on the side of truth and justice. He further alleged that the BJP had reportedly asked voters to vote in their favour stating that voters in other polling booths were 'blessing' them.

3 PM

About 61.66 percent of voter turnout is recorded till 3 pm.

Gujjula Premender Reddy, BJP state general secretary alleged that Wardhannapet legislator Aroori Ramesh is distributing money to the voters sitting in a house in the constituency while polling is going on for the by-election today.

"The authorities have to take action against the TRS leaders who are distributing money. Despite BJP activists complaining about the matter and holding a dharna, the police have so far not done anything to the legislator. It is unfortunate that the house was not searched and the money was not seized," said Gujjula Premender Reddy.

The BJP condemned the attempt to arrest BJP activists in the wrong way. "BJP is demanding immediate arrest of Aroori Ramesh," added Gujjula Premender Reddy.

1 PM

About 45.63 percent of polling is recorded till 1 pm.

Tension has gripped the Huzurabad constituency after TRS leader Kaushik Reddy was stopped by BJP cadres in Ganumukkala village. Kaushik Reddy is the TRS party's chief election agent. Under rules, he can go inside the polling station. But the BJP cadres alleged that he was influencing voters in the queue. BJP leaders shouted `Go Back' slogans after spotting Kaushik Reddy. Police intervened and whisked Kaushik Reddy away.

11 AM

Around 33.27 percent of voter turnout is recorded till 11 am.

9 AM

The polling percentage for the high octane election stands at 10.5 percent till 9 am. During the 2018 Assembly Election, the final polling percentage was 84.42 percent in the constituency.

Poll authorities said 306 polling stations have been set up for the by-poll and over 5,000 polling staff and security personnel deployed to ensure smooth voting in the constituency. Special arrangements have been made for differently-abled, elderly, and COVID-19 patients.

A total of 306 EVMs are going to be utilized for the polling. Though there are 30 candidates in the fray, the main fight will be between the ruling TRS, BJP, and Congress.

The by-poll was necessitated following the resignation of former health minister Etela Rajendar from the K. Chandrashekar Rao cabinet. He also resigned as Huzurabad MLA and later joined the BJP. The voters will decide the fate of Gellu Srinivas Yadav (TRS), Etela Rajender (BJP), and Balmoor Venkat Nursing Rao (Congress) in a three-cornered contest which is considered a prestige battle for TRS president and Chief Minister KCR.

Huzurabad Constituency

Huzurabad is one of 13 constituencies in the Karimnagar district. It is part of the Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency. Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar won the Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat in 2019.

Rajender has been winning from Huzurabad Assembly constituency on TRS ticket since 2009. He first defeated V. Krishna Mohan Rao of Congress by 15,035 votes.

In the 2010 by-poll, Rajender increased his victory margin to nearly 80,000 against his nearest rival M. Damodar Reddy of TDP. In the 2014 election held just before the formation of Telangana, the former minister won the seat with a margin of 57,037 votes.

K. Sudershan Reddy of Congress was the runner-up. Rajender continued his winning streak from Huzurabad in 2018, defeating his nearest rival Kaushik Reddy of Congress by 47,803 votes.
