By Newsmeter Network Published on 30 July 2021 6:11 AM GMTHyderabad: Telangana Director of Public Health (DPH) has asked all registered private hospitals in the state to install Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen generation plants by August 31 to avoid cancellation of licences.
This follows the directive by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). "The oxygen generation plant provides the respective hospital with an assured medical oxygen supply that is of critical need during health emergencies. The government of India requests all the States to establish PSA oxygen generation plants in both public health facilities as well as in the private hospitals," MoHFW said in a letter to states.
DPH G Srinivasa Rao asked all private hospitals to install PSA oxygen generation plants as per their bed capacity without fail. "Failure may be viewed seriously and can lead to the derecognition of hospitals," he said.
Under MoHFW guidelines, a hospital with up to 200 beds has to install 500 liters per minute (LPM) plant, while hospitals with 200 to 500 beds are required to install 1,000 LP plants, and hospitals with more than 500 beds are required to install 2,000LPM plants before August 31, 2021.
During the second wave of COVID19, there was a huge demand for oxygen in the hospitals which also led to many deaths. After that, the Telangana government started installing oxygen plants in different hospitals.
Waking up to the oxygen crisis, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on May 18 ordered setting up 48 life-saving oxygen generation plants in government hospitals to meet growing patient demand.
With an installed capacity of generating 324 metric tonnes of oxygen, the plants would cater to the needs in the future. KCR also instructed the officials to set up an additional plant to produce 100 MT of liquid Oxygen in Hyderabad.
The CM instructed that 6 plants with 16 MT capacity each, 15 plants with eight MT capacity each, and 27 plants with 4 MT capacity each should be set up in Hyderabad and district area hospitals.
