Hyderabad: Police officials on Friday busted an inter-state opium straw cultivation gang operating from Telangana and Karnataka. They arrested a person and seized 390 kg of opium poppy straw worth Rs 20 lakhs.

According to the police, based on credible information, the officials from Kandukur PS raided a place in Lemur village and nabbed Dandupally Chennakeshavaulu (45) who was cultivating opium poppy straw in the village with the help of his aide, Dandupally Chennakeshavaulu (45), and selling it in and around Bengaluru. A person named Dhimmir Venkataramana is said to have helped the police in busting the operation.

Both the accused had many contacts with needy customers in Bangalore who are willing to purchase opium poppy straw for high rates. They were involved in the illegal cultivation of opium poppy straw. Even though unauthorised cultivation of the poppy crop is banned, Chennakeshavaulu had been growing the same without taking permission from authorities. Venkatarama had already been arrested by the police in a previous raid.
