`No country for women': 764 rapes, 175 dowry deaths reported in Telangana last year

Around 17,791 cases of crime against women were reported in the state in 2020 which includes 15,662 cases under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

`No country for women: 764 rapes, 175 dowry deaths reported in Telangana last year

Hyderabad: Body of a 32-year-old tribal woman, who was gang-raped and killed in Sangareddy, was found on November 5, 2020. Police later registered a case and detained three persons in connection with the incident.

According to the police, the woman had separated from her husband around 12 years ago and lived with her two sons at Kollur Tanda in Tellapur municipality on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

On November 4, 2020, three persons - Madhu, Chandulal, and Kutumba Rao – visited the woman's house and asked her to accompany them. However, the woman did not return home. There was no clue about the three men who had visited her house. Later, villagers found her body on the outskirts and informed the family.

This is one among the 764 rape incidents in Telangana in 2020, according to the latest data of National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB). Around 17,791 cases of crime against women were reported in the state in 2020 which includes 15,662 cases under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The number has decreased as compared to 2019. Around 18,394 cases of crime against women were reported in 2019. These include 873 cases of rape. It is pertinent to note between March and May 2020, there was a strict lockdown in the state.

Data reveals 7453 cases of cruelty by a husband or his relatives have been reported in 2020. Also, 4907 cases of assault on women with the intention to outrage modesty were reported in the state. Likewise, 175 dowry deaths were also reported.

The state also witnessed 2067 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 1314 cases of Kidnapping and abduction of women, 52 cases of human trafficking and 45 cases under Cyber Crimes/Information Technology Act (Women Centric Crimes only).

Hyderabad reported 2369 crimes against women. These include 22 dowry deaths, 131 cases of kidnapping and abduction, 451 cases of assault on women with the intention to outrage her modesty, and 15 cases of cybercrimes.

Across the country, 3,71,503 cases of crimes against women were reported in 2020. Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 49,385 such incidents. The majority of crimes against women were registered under cruelty by the husband or his relatives. These account for 111549 cases. Those were followed by 85392 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty.

The NCRB collected data from 36 states and Union Territories and 53 metropolitan cities. Crime in India 2020 deals with the data from January 1 to December 31, 2020.
