Hyderabad: Around 29,792 posts in the police force are lying vacant in Telangana, according to the latest Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) report. The actual strength of police personnel in the state as of 1 January 2020 is around 48,877. Also, there are only 2,500 women police officers in the state.
The report also stated that Telangana has one officer for every 764 people and one police officer for an area of around 2.29 sq km. There are around 838 police stations in the state of which 396 are rural police stations, 350 are urban police stations, and 92 are special-purpose police stations.
The Telangana DGP, M. Mahendra Reddy, said that the state government recently announced recruitment for the police and other government departments. Soon, we will recruit more police personnel, he added.
Andhra Pradesh
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh has one police officer for 879 people in the state and one officer for an area of around 2.74 sq km. The state has 59,553 police personnel and 14,341 vacant posts, according to the report. There are around 1,021 police stations in the state of which 696 are rural police stations, 222 urban police stations, and 103 special-purpose police stations.
There are only 3,483 women police personnel in the state.

The population per police person during 2019 was 511.81 as compared to 503.40 the previous year. The highest ratio, 867.57, was in Bihar. The area per police person during 2019 was 1.25 as compared to 1.27 the previous year. The highest ratio, 70.48, was in Ladakh. Around 5,31,737 police posts are vacant in the country. Out of total 20,91,488 police force in the country, only 2,15,504(10.30%) are women in the force. Around 1,19,069 police personnel recruited during 2019.
