Rachakonda cops arrested 81 human traffickers, rescued 102 victims since Jan

The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU), Rachakonda Commissionerate, rescued over 102 victims and apprehended 81 human traffickers in the last five months.

Rachakonda cops arrested 81 human traffickers, rescued 102 victims since Jan

Hyderabad: The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU), Rachakonda Commissionerate, rescued over 102 victims and apprehended 81 human traffickers in the last five months. They also cracked 30 human trafficking cases and placed 28 notorious traffickers under Preventive Detention.

Last month, the AHTU busted a human trafficking and prostitution racket that was being run by Ugandan nationals through the dating app Locanto. On 20 May, AHTU organized a decoy operation and apprehended two Uganda traffickers and rescued three victims, also from Uganda. They also seized banned drugs from them. They found that the Ugandans were illegally staying in India. A case was registered at Chaitanyapuri police station and the accused were remanded to judicial custody.

AHTU was formed in Rachakonda on 'World Day against Trafficking in Persons' on 30 July 2020.

The Rachakonda commissioner of police, Mahesh Bhagwat, said the AHTU in Rachakonda was formed as a ministry of Home Affairs initiative under the Nirbhaya Fund with a focus to eliminate trafficking crimes against women and children.

Rescues

The Rachakonda police have rescued 31 victims - 30 adults and a minor - from sex trafficking. Twelve of the victims were from Telangana, five from Andhra Pradesh, three from Maharashtra, seven from West Bengal, one from Assam, and three from Uganda.

AHTU also rescued 71 minor victims from labor trafficking. Of these 55 were boys and 16 were girls. All were below the age of 17 years and were working in hazardous industries. Twelve of the minor victims were from Telangana, one from Andhra Pradesh, 13 from Chhattisgarh , 10 from Jharkhand, nine from Maharashtra, three from Madhya Pradesh, 11 from Uttar Pradesh, two from West Bengal, and 10 from Bihar.

Arrests

The Rachakonda police apprehended 55 sex traffickers - 38 men and 17 women. These include 37 organizers and 18 customers. The age of the traffickers ranged from 25 to 50 years.

Also, they apprehended 26 accused/traffickers for labour trafficking all of whom were men.

Operation Smile

The Rachakonda commissionerate conducted 'Operation Smile VII' in January to trace missing children, potential child labour, bonded child labour, and adolescents in hazardous occupations. AHTU rescued 65 minors and registered nine cases against the accused who had engaged minor children in various works.
