SC proposes elevation of 7 judges for Telangana HC, 4 are women

Hyderabad: Marking the highest strength of Women Judges in the Telangana High Court, the Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on 17th August 2021 has approved the proposal for elevation of seven of Judges, out of which four are women.

The Supreme Court has proposed elevation of Judicial officers P. Sree Sudha, C. Sumalatha, Dr. (Ms.) G. Radha Rani, M. Laxman, N. Tukaramji, A. Venkateshwara Reddy and Judicial member, ITAT, P. Madhavi Devi, as Judges.

This marks the highest strength of women judges in the Telangana High court. Telangana will now have five women judges.

It is to note that Telangana High Court Chief Justice Hima Kohli is one among the nine judges recommended by the Supreme Court collegium for the appointment as a judge in the apex court, sources said.

Before being elevated as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, Justice Hima Kohli served as a judge of the Delhi High Court. Incidentally, Justice Kohli is the first woman to hold the office of the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.

Justice Hima Kohli was due to retire at the end of August. However, with her name being recommended for appointment as a judge to the Supreme Court, Justice Kohli will demit office as Supreme Court judge in 2025. At present, the retirement age is 65 years for Supreme Court judges and 62 years for high court judges.

In her brief tenure for just over seven months as Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, Justice Hima Kohli has left an indelible mark. Justice Kohli will be remembered for coming to the rescue of the people during the COVID crisis.
