Hyderabad: YSR Telangana party chief Y.S Sharmila was arrested on Tuesday for launching a hunger strike at the Boduppal exhibition grounds demanding employment for jobless youth. She did not have permission to protest, the police said.

She was later shifted to Medipally police station.

Tension prevailed in the area as her supporters obstructed the police when they took her into custody. YSRTP functionaries alleged that the party was first given permission to conduct the protest but that it was rejected later.

Sharmila, along with a few of her followers, staged a dharna after she met the family of Ravindra Naik, a student of Osmania University who died by suicide earlier. The Rachakonda police, in a press release, said that the inspector of the Medipally police station had visited Peerzadiguda where the party first wanted to hold a protest and had sought permission for the same.

It may be mentioned that Sharmila, the daughter of late Chief Minister of erstwhile United Andhra Pradesh Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy, has been conducting a hunger strike every Tuesday for the past several weeks demanding the state government solve the acute unemployment problem.

Earlier on Monday, Y.S Sharmila announced that she will embark on a padayatra from Chevella from 20 October.

Sharmila said the padayatra will start from Chevella and end there. She will tour all Assembly constituencies except the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). She will cover 12-15 km every day to know about the problems of the people, she said, adding that the unemployment deeksha will continue every Tuesday during the padayatra.

She said the aim of the padayatra was to achieve the aspirations of her father and late Chief Minister Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy.
