The incident came to light on Sunday after a joint team of police and the forest staff nabbed four poachers during a vehicle checking drive.
According to police, the tiger got caught in the snare set up by poachers in a forest under Tadvai limits on September 21. Poachers later decorticated the big cat and extracted its nails. They chopped the tiger's carcass and divided it among themselves.
The four poachers decided to smuggle the remnants of the tiger to Chhattisgarh after a few days in a bid to avoid suspicion.
Mulugu district superintendent of police Sangram Singh Ganpatrao Patil said the tiger had come to the Tadvai area from Chhattisgarh and was first spotted on August 19 this year.
Acting on a tip-off that some persons belonging to Kodishala village were planning to visit Chhattisgarh to find buyers for the skin and claws, a joint team of forest and police officials conducted an extensive vehicle checking on Sunday.
During the process, they intercepted a white car with four persons on board. During a search, they found a tiger claw. They immediately took the four accused into custody. They have been identified as Madakam Naresh, Madavi Erumaiah, Madakam Mukesh, and Madavi Deva, all hailing from Kodishala village.
Police said the accused confessed to the crime. They told the police that they resorted to poaching to earn extra money to meet their expenses.
The joint squad of police and forest personnel seized tiger skin, skeletal remains, and parts of leg, nails, and snares from the accused.
