Hyderabad: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) that bagged both the MLC seats in the recently held elections, has announced Nomula Bhagat Kumar, the son of former MLA Nomula Narsimhaiah, as its candidate for the Nagarjuna Sagar Assembly by-poll.

"The name of Nomula Bhagat Kumar as the TRS party candidate in the Nagarjuna Sagar by-election has been finalized by the party chief, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. To this end, party B-form was handed over to Mr. Bhagat at the Telangana Bhavan," the TRS said in a statement.

While the Congress party that has already kick-started its ground work in Nagarjuna Sagar constituency has fielded senior party leader K Jana Reddy. It is now for the BJP to announce its candidate, for the political battle to begin.

In March, the Election Commission of India had announced that the Nagarjuna Sagar by-poll will be held on 17 April and the votes will be counted on 2 May. The last date for filing of nominations is 30 March while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is 3 April.

The Nagarjuna Sagar by-poll was necessitated after the sitting TRS MLA from the constituency, Nomula Narsimhaiah, passed away at a private hospital in Hyderabad on 1 December. The 64-year-old leader joined the TRS around 2014 when the agitation for a separate Telangana was at its peak. He lost the election from the Nagarjunasagar constituency but in 2018 he trumped the sitting Congress stalwart, K. Jana Reddy, by over 7,000 votes.

After the Dubbaka by-poll debacle and drubbing in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal elections, the Nagarjuna Sagar by-poll is crucial for the TRS. The party recently won both seats in the MLC election.
