Hyderabad: Telangana police have registered 87,890 cases for violating mask rule and collected Rs 5.26 crore from violators in 15 day post-lockdown period.

On April 11, the government in its order made wearing face masks mandatory in all public places, workspaces, and means of transport. Failing to wear a mask attracts a penalty of Rs 1,000 and prosecution under sections 51,60 of Disaster Management Act, 2005, and section 188 of IPC.

Telangana government during the peak of the second wave of COVID19 had imposed lockdown in several phases.

On June 19, the government in its order withdrew the lockdown. The state government, however, stressed the need for wearing masks and maintaining social distancing in the post lockdown period.

It wanted citizens to follow COVID appropriate behavior in order to keep the third wave at bay. In its affidavit submitted to Telangana high court, Director-General of Police, M Mahendra Reddy said police have been taking steps to ensure COVID19 appropriate behavior is followed and people wear face masks in public places in the post lockdown period.
