Tension grips Kurnool’s Ramco Cement Plant after protesting workers torch container

Kurnool: Tension gripped Ramco Cement plant at Kolimigundla Mandal in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday when the contract workers staged protests and set a container on fire.

Shouting slogans against the management, the workers were demanding salaries and making arrangements for their journey to home.

Over 1,500 contract workers from various parts of the country have been working in the cement factory for the past few months. Due to Covid-19 lockdown, the cement plant was shut and the contract workers were left stranded at the premises.

The management of the plant failed to pay wages to the workers citing lockdown. Expressing anguish over the attitude of the management, the workers staged massive protests and torched one of the containers at the plant.

When the situation became tense, the Kurnool district administration deployed a huge contingent of police at the plant to prevent any untoward incident. Officials of the Police and Revenue Departments also rushed to the site and tried to pacify the agitating workers.

A few weeks ago also, the workers staged a protest against the management for failing to provide basic facilities during the Covid-19 lockdown.
