115 criminal cases pending against Telangana MPs, MLAs; HC asks subordinate courts to speed up trial

Figures reveal that 20 cases are pending against the MPs & MLAs before the CBI Court. The High Court directed the CBI Court to make an effort to dispose of the discharge petitions within 2 months.
Likewise, 46 cases pending against the MPs & MLAs are at the stage of issuance of summons. The concerned police authorities serve the summons with an outer limit of 2 weeks.
In 10 cases, the proceedings against the MPs & MLAs have been stayed by the High Court. The High Court bench was directed to pass appropriate orders on the Miscellaneous Petitions including Stay Vacation Petitions.
Eleven cases are pending against the MPs and MLAs despite the receipt of summons. Of these cases, 8 are pending before the Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Hyderabad whereas 2 are pending before the Principal District Session Judge, Siddipet, and one before the Principal District Judge, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district.
Telangana High Court bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice T. Vinod Kumar was perusing the consolidated collated data submitted by the Registrar General. The Court was adhering to the orders of the Supreme Court
Recently, the Supreme Court in Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay & others Vs Union of India and others asked all the High Courts to issue directions to the designated courts dealing with the trial of criminal cases pending against the elected representatives for expeditious disposal.
The Supreme Court in its order held that the pendency of the criminal cases against the MPs and MLAs has a direct bearing on political democracy and there is a need to ensure that these cases are taken up on a priority basis and are decided expeditiously.
Ch. Vidyasagar, Senior Counsel appearing for the Registrar General, High Court was directed to submit a compliance report on or before the next date of hearing.
