15 LVPEI scientists named in 2025 Stanford/Elsevier global top 2% list

Hyderabad: As many as 15 LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) scientists and researchers are in the 2025 Stanford/Elsevier ‘Top 2% Scientists List’.
LVPEI is the only institute in India whose ophthalmology research has received global recognition time and again.
This year has been very special for the institute as 15 researchers have made it to the top influential researchers list with standardised citation metrics.

The ‘Top 2% Scientists List’ by Stanford University and Elsevier is based on composite citation scores indexed in Scopus as of August 2025.
The calculation includes career-long and single-year metrics, adjustments for self-citation and fair comparisons across scientific subfields, ensuring rigorous and transparent recognition of global research excellence.

Dr Gullapalli N Rao’s achievements in ophthalmology
Dr Gullapalli N Rao, LVPEI’s Founder and Chair, was a notable standout, ranking second in the lifetime rankings for ophthalmology in India.
This recognition reaffirms his status as a leading scientist in the field, with his career-long and single-year research impact being acknowledged.
LVPEI’s strong showing is a testament to the growing excellence and international standing of its research programs, which contributed 15 of the 61 Indian ophthalmologists who made the annual rankings.
Dr Gullapalli Rao and the foundations of LVPEI
Dr Gullapalli Rao is a distinguished Indian ophthalmologist, best known for founding the LV Prasad Eye Institute.
He completed his basic medical education in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, and his postgraduate residency at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. He then pursued further training in the United States at Tufts University School of Medicine and the University of Rochester School of Medicine, where he later became a faculty member.
Dr Rao returned to India in 1986 to establish LVPEI in Hyderabad in 1987.
The institute was founded on the principle of providing high-quality, efficient, and equitable eye care, with a mission to serve all segments of society, regardless of their ability to pay. His work has focused on diseases of the cornea, eye banking, community eye health and eye care policy and planning.
Over his career, Dr Rao has received numerous national and international awards, including the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award.
He has also been inducted into the ‘Ophthalmology Hall of Fame’ by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Dr Rao’s global leadership extends to his roles as a past Chair and CEO of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and the former President of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis. His dedication has been instrumental in restoring sight to millions and establishing India as a significant contributor to global eye care.
Dr Rao is the first and only Indian to be selected for the ‘World EyeCons21’ award.
