17th Lok Sabha (LS) held 274 sittings which is the lowest in parliamentary history

17th Lok Sabha: Asaduddin Owaisi, Imtiaz Jaleel, N K Premachandran ask highest questions

Hyderabad: The 17th Lok Sabha (LS) held 274 sittings which is the lowest in parliamentary history.

Of the total MPS, 15 percent were women and 50 percent were below 60 years of age.

Which party asked the most questions in the 17th LS?

Telangana’s All India Majlis –E-Ittehadul Muslimeen Asaduddin Owaisi from Hyderabad and Imtiaz Jaleel from Aurangabad top the list with 640 questions.

In the 15th Lok Sabha, Asaduddin Owaisi had asked 1080 questions.

MP N K Premachandran from Revolutionary Socialist Party, Kollam in Kerala asked 270 questions in the House.

From the political parties, the Nationalist Congress Party tops the list with its MPs asking a maximum number of questions.

A detailed analysis by PRS Legislative Research, a non-profit organization reveals that younger MPs asked more questions than their older counterparts.

· Those who were lower than 60 years of age asked 226 questions.

· Those above 60 years of age asked 180 questions.

· Male MPs asked 203 questions on average

· Female MPs asked 199 questions on average

· First-time MP’s asked more than 200 questions on an average while those who are six or more term MP’s asked 106 questions.

State-wise MP’s participation

· Maharashtra - MPs from Maharashtra asked the highest number of questions. An average of 370 questions were asked from the state. 447 questions by Nationalist Congress Party, Shiv Sena which has only 5 MP’s asked 385 questions

· Andhra Pradesh – MP’s from AP are the second highest on the list with an average of 275 questions. YSRCP party asked 265 questions.

· Rajasthan, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Jharkhand are the states where an average of 273 to 243 questions were asked by the MPs.

· Telangana: Seventh in the list an average of 215 questions were asked in the 17th Lok Sabha. BRS asked 233 questions and AIMIM asked 300 questions.

· MPs from the northeastern states asked 152 questions on average.

Participation in debate:

MPs from Kerala and Rajasthan had the highest participation in debates on average. This is followed by MPs from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand.

· Political parties saw NCP, Indian National Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party, AIMIM, RSP, Rashtriya Loktantrik party participate in maximum debates

· MP’s who are graduates were found to participate more in debate with an average of 47 debates, and post-graduates with an average of 59 debates.

· Those MP’s who have studied till Higher secondary participated in 39 debates

Lowest Private Member’s Bill

· The 17th Lok Sabha saw low participation in introducing the Private Member’s Bill. There were 729 PMBs introduced which is 1.5 PMBs per MP on an average.

· Average of male MPs introducing PMB is 1.0 and that of female MPs is 1.0

· A private member bill is introduced by a Member of Parliament who is not a minister.

· In the 16th Lok Sabha 1,114 PMBs were introduced

The 17th Lok Sabha held 274 sittings which is the lowest of all previous full-term Lok Sabha’s. About 15 percent of MPs were women. 50 percent of the MPs are below 60 years of age.
