Telangana CM accuses BRS of blocking 42% reservations for Backward Classes

42% BC Quota bills stuck with President, BRS to blame: Telangana CM Revanth

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has alleged that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is deliberately obstructing the passage of crucial reservation bills that seek to provide 42% quota for Backward Classes (BCs) in education, employment, and local bodies.

Bills pending with President

The chief minister reminded the Assembly that two bills, pertaining to reservations in jobs, education, and local bodies, were already passed by the Telangana Assembly and sent to the Governor months ago.

“Instead of approving them, the Governor forwarded them to the President, and they have been pending there for nearly five months,” he said.

Legal hurdles in reservation cap

Explaining the current challenge, Revanth said both the 2018 Panchayat Raj Act and the 2019 Municipal Act, introduced by the previous KCR government, capped reservations at 50%. This created a deadlock when the High Court recently ordered local body elections to be conducted by September 30, with clear demarcation of reservations.

“To overcome this, our government issued an ordinance to ensure 42% BC reservations and immediately sent it to the Governor. But again, it was forwarded to the President based on BRS leaders’ advice,” the chief minister added.

BRS accused of political double standards

Revanth Reddy strongly criticized BRS MLA Gangula Kamalakar for accusing the Congress of failing to pursue the matter in Delhi.

“We wrote five letters to the Prime Minister, but never received an appointment. To build pressure, we even staged a protest at Jantar Mantar, where 100 MPs from other states supported us. Yet, BRS MPs in the Rajya Sabha remained silent. Even Kamalakar himself did not attend,” he said.

Congress commitment to Backward Classes

The Chief Minister reiterated that his government is determined to deliver on its promise of 42% reservations for BCs.

“BRS leadership has no intention of supporting weaker sections. Even in today’s session, they tried to disrupt proceedings and block the Bill. This is a people’s government, and we will fulfill the commitment we made. If the Opposition refuses to cooperate, the people will give them a fitting reply,” Revanth declared.
