Vijayawada: Five members of a family, including a six-month-old girl, from Hyderabad were killed in a road accident when their car hit a culvert near Gouravaram village under Jaggaiahpeta mandal in Krishna district.

The police said the car hit the culvert at a high speed, resulting in the spot death of three persons, including two women. Two more persons, including the baby girl, died in the hospital.

The victims are residents of the HUDA Colony in Chandanagar, Hyderabad. At the time of the accident, there were six people in the car.

The deceased were identified as K. Kutumba Rao, his wife Marthamma, his relatives Shanthi and Indira, and his granddaughter Princy (six-month-old). Rao's son Joshi was admitted to a hospital with severe head injuries.

The police said the car was heading towards Jangareddigudem in West Godavari district from Hyderabad. The family was going to Jangareddigudem for a ritual.

They suspect that over-speeding was the reason for the accident as the driver failed to negotiate the vehicle at the steep curve. The bodies were shifted to the hospital for post-mortem. The locals also suspect that drowsiness may be the reason for the fatal accident.
