606 nominations rejected, maximum number from Medchal, Jubilee Hills, Palakurthi

Hyderabad: The returning officers of all the 119 constituencies in the state have rejected the nominations filed by 606 candidates following scrutiny of the nomination papers on November 13, 2023. The last date for filing nominations by candidates contesting the upcoming elections to the Telangana State Legislative Assembly was November 10.

According to the consolidated list furnished by the office of the chief electoral officer (CEO) of Telangana, nominations of 2,898 candidates were accepted while 606 candidates were rejected. Between November 3 and 10, a total of 5,716 sets of nominations were received by the ROs for the 119 constituencies in the state.

Though the maximum number of rejections were from independents, the candidates from all parties faced rejection of their nominations due to various types of violations.

Maximum rejections were from Medchal, Jubilee Hills and Palakurthi

The Medchal constituency has the highest number of rejected candidates at 38, out of which 28 are independent candidates. Jubilee Hills has 18 rejections from various parties and so does Palakurthi. Goshamahal and Warangal West have 15 rejections each.

Gajwel has 13 rejections of which 12 are independent candidates and one is from BSP. Other maximum rejections are from constituencies including Miryalaguda (12), Kukatpally (12) and Thungathurthy (12), Pargi (7 of 11 rejected candidates are independents), Nampally (11 rejections), Quthbullapur and Suryapet (10 rejections each), Bellampalli and Alair (nine rejections each). Bodhan constituency has eight rejections, four of which are independent candidates. Nizamabad and Charminar have eight rejections each, and Malkajgiri too has eight rejections, four of which are from BJP.

Reasons for rejection

There are many reasons for the rejection of nomination papers of the candidates. Most common causes include furnishing incomplete information and leaving some mandatory columns blank, lack of required proposers, fake signature, failure to file affidavits, wrongful declaration of personal information, concealing important information such as past criminal records, qualifications or information pertaining to the candidateā€™s assets/properties, same candidate filing several nominations and proxy nomination that is papers being filed on behalf of the prospective candidates.

Meanwhile, the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is November 15 while the poll date is on November 30 and the results are supposed to be out on December 3.
