Amaravati: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday announced that the State government will impose a ban on the use of social media by children below 13 years of age, citing concerns over their safety and well-being.

Speaking in the Assembly during a discussion on the Appropriation Bill, the Chief Minister said the government would initiate steps within 90 days to ensure that children under 13 do not have access to social media platforms.

Ban for children below 13 within 90 days

The Chief Minister stated that a proposal had been received suggesting a complete ban on social media usage for children below 13 years. Responding to the suggestion, he said the government is committed to implementing measures to restrict access for this age group.

“We will begin the process within 90 days to ensure that children under 13 years do not have access to social media,” he said.

Decision pending for the 13–16 age group

Regarding teenagers between 13 and 16 years, CM Naidu said the government would hold consultations with stakeholders before taking a final decision.

“For children aged between 13 and 16 years, we will discuss with all concerned and arrive at an appropriate decision,” he added.

Protecting children from harm

Emphasising the risks associated with unregulated social media exposure, the Chief Minister said the government is determined to prevent children from being adversely affected.

“Social media should not harm our children. This government is committed to protecting them,” he said. He also cautioned that while technology can serve as a powerful tool when used wisely, it can be destructive if individuals become dependent on it.

“Technology acts like a weapon when used properly. But if one becomes a slave to it, lives can be ruined,” he observed.
