Amaravati: As many as 17 people have died in Andhra Pradesh due to rain-related incidents in the past three days, following unprecedented rainfall caused by a depression in the Bay of Bengal, the government said on Monday.

According to an official release, five persons died at Mogalrajapuram in Vijayawada due to landslides and one person each at Vijayawada Rural, G Kondru mandal and Reddygudem mandal. They all belong to the NTR district.

Elderly woman dies under falling boulders

ā€œFive deaths in Guntur district. A teacher and two students travelling from Uppalapadu to Namburu were washed away in a local stream and an 80-year-old woman died when boulders fell on her in the first ward of Mangalagiri town,ā€ the release said.

Further, it said that another person was washed away in Kondaveedu stream at Ponnekallu village in the Guntur district.

Besides rain-related deaths, three children drowned in Prakasam districtā€™s Markapuram division when they went swimming.

Two deaths reported from Pedakakini mandal and One unidentified dead body found in deep water flow at Nandivelugu road.

Ground floors flooded due to breach in rivulet

Budameru, a rivulet on the outskirts of the city, suffered breaches and overflowed at many places, inundating the ground floors of thousands of residential buildings in Ajit Singh Nagar, Krishnalanka, Bhupesh Nagar, Ibrahimpatnam.

Life was completely thrown out of gear in Vijayawada following torrential downpours over the past three days and with more than 24 hours of power cuts in several parts of the city.



A total of 4,48,007 people were affected by the floods. As many as 166 relief camps were set up, accommodating 41,927 persons.





Rains to continue

The State received a cumulative rainfall of 548.4 mm as against normal rainfall of 429.1 mm with a deviation of 27.8 per cent (excess) from June 1 to date.

On Monday, the average cumulative rainfall was 2.7 mm as against the normal rainfall of 4.5 mm. Vatsavai in NTR District received the highest rainfall of 38.2 mm.

On Tuesday, September 3, light to moderate rains is likely to occur in isolated places in Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Anakapalli, Kakinada, Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla, Palnadu, Prakasam, Nellore, Kurnool, Nandyal, Ananthapuram, Sri Satya Sai, YSR, Annamayya, Chittoor and Tirupati districts.

The depression over South Chhattisgarh and adjoining South Odisha has moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 17 kmph is likely to move nearly northwestwards across South Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha and weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area during the next 12 hours.

Animal deaths

A total of 39 animals lost their lives during the floods in Panamaluru, Ganginenipalem, Tripuranthakam, Nuzveed, Guntur, Bapatla NTR, Palnadu Districts. As many as 5,300 poultry birds died in the NTR district.

Around 38 boats were fully damaged and six boats were partially damaged. As many as 97 fishing nets were damaged due to heavy rains.



Around 61 MI tanks in the NTR district were breached; 4 in Guntur, 8 in Eluru, and 6 tank breaches in Budameru. In Guntur, Cherukupalli mandal, three electrical poles of 33 KV were damaged and in 24 villages power was restored.

As many as 1,51,646 hectares of agricultural land in 20 districts, and 14,436 hectares of horticulture crops have been destroyed in Guntur, Bapatla, Krishna and Palnadu.

39 teams deployed

A total of 39 teams including 20 SDRF and 19 NDRF were deployed across the State.

The Centre has been requested for six helicopters for airlifting stranded people and dropping food items. Ten NDRF teams and 40 motorised boats have also been requested to undertake search and rescue operations in the affected districts.

The NDRF teams will be equipped with inflatable boats, pole and tree cutters and basic medical aid tools.




The government on Monday received power boats which it asked from the Centre to carry out flood relief operations in Vijayawada, especially at a time when it was running short of them. Many boats are being used to evacuate flood victims.

One chopper has already arrived at Vijayawada. Around 80 boats (37 non-motorised and 43 motorized) have been arranged to evacuate people from inundated areas Ajithsingh Nagar, YSR Colony, Jakkampudi Colony, Ambapuram in Vijayawada Urban/Rural.

A total of 276 active swimmers have been engaged with boats for rescue operations.

Trains cancelled on September 3

Due to heavy rains and water-logging over the tracks at several locations in Vijayawada and Secunderabad divisions on South Central Railway.

Train No 20707 Secunderabad-Visakhapatnam Vande Bharat Express leaving Secunderabad on September 3 is cancelled.

Train No 20708 Visakhapatnam-Secunderabad Vandebharat Express leaving Visakhapatnam on September 3 is cancelled for want of rake.

Rahul urges Centre, Andhra govt to provide rehabilitation packages for those affected

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday urged Congress leaders and workers to mobilise all available resources to support the ongoing relief and rescue efforts. Gandhi asserted that the Telangana Government is working tirelessly to manage the crisis and initiate the rebuilding process.

"I strongly urge both the central government and the Andhra Pradesh government to swiftly provide comprehensive rehabilitation packages for all those affected by this disaster," he said. "My thoughts are with the people of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh as they endure relentless rainfall and devastating floods," the former Congress chief said.



He extended his deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. "I urge Congress leaders and workers to mobilise all available resources to support the ongoing relief and rescue efforts," Gandhi said.
