The decision to clean the area and cut down overgrown trees comes after the university officials discovered heaps of used condoms and syringes.
What is happening on the varsity campus?
For many years, an area of 74 acres on the north campus near the students' hostel has been an isolated area. Two weeks ago, a 32-year-old man was murdered near Andhra University's Samatha Hostel. After the body was discovered within the campus limits, the university officials decided to clear away the bushes and overgrown trees as there was no way for vehicles to go for security checks. While clearing the area, the officials found liquor bottles and condom packets. They also discovered a structure built on a tree with a mattress.
What the officials say
Speaking to News Meter, Andhra University registrar V. Krishna Mohan said, "After the murder, we decided to strengthen our security and started clearing away the bushes. We found that some outsiders have been using the isolated area on the campus for anti-social activities. Some girl students have also complained of chain snatching." He added that the area was inaccessible for security personnel or even a vehicle. "Now, we are clearing the area and constructing a road for the night security to go for rounds," the registrar added.
Who is involved?
ļ»æWith drugs like ganja and syringes found on the campus, the officials are investigating who is involved in this. It is suspected that a network or gang might be involved who might be procuring drugs from the agency. However, there is no confirmation on whether the students of the varsity are using drugs or if it is only the outsiders.
