Vijayawada: Customs officials in Bangalore have seized 4.5 kg of 'Ephedrine' sent by a courier from Andhra Pradesh. The officials arrested Guttula Teja, a delivery boy from DST international courier service.

"A parcel was sent to Australia through DST international courier service in Bharathi Nagar, Vijayawada, in January. It was booked by Kondaveeti Gopi Sai, a resident of Sattenapalli in the Guntur district. While the parcel was to be sent to Australia, it was by mistake sent to Canada. The courier was sent back to India and was stuck at the Customs Office, Bangalore. On April 27, when they opened the parcel, they found four kilograms of drugs," said Khadar Basha, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Vijayawada Central Zone.

Customs zeroed in on Teja since he had given his Aadhar details for booking the courier. Customs officials called Guttula Teja to Bangalore to collect the parcel. However, he was arrested. According to the police, the Aadhar card of K Gopi Sai was not clear, so he asked Teja to pledge his card. Teja claimed that he was innocent and it was K Gopi Sai from Sattenapalli who asked him to send the parcel abroad.

City police commissioner Kanti Rana Tata said they had formed three teams. One team has been sent to Sattanapalli to look for Sai Gopi. Another team will be assisting Bangalore Airport Customs officials. During the investigation, police found that the courier boy had recently sent a pickle parcel twice. Investigators are trying to figure out whether the parcel contained pickles or drugs.

What is 'Ephedrine'?

Ephedrine can be used to create 'Methamphetamine' through a chemical reduction process because of its structural similarities. The sale of Ephedrine is restricted in many countries. It can be sold only on a medical prescription.
