Big push for education: Osmania gets Rs 1,000 crore, mid-day meals extended to Telangana junior colleges

Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka presented the State budget for the financial year 2026-27 in the Telangana State Legislative Assembly on Friday.

Rs 26,674 crores allocation

A total allocation of Rs 26,674 crores was made for the education sector in the state.

Here are the key focus areas that were announced in the education sector:

1. To strengthen foundational learning, 1,362 pre-primary sections have been launched as a pilot project across 33 districts, with plans to expand this to 2,500 government schools in the coming academic year.

2. The government has introduced Telangana Public Schools, where selected campuses will be modernised to provide education from Pre-Primary to Class 12 for 1,500 students, featuring digital facilities and dedicated transportation.

3. The Mid-Day Meal scheme is being extended to include students studying in Government Junior Colleges across the state.

4. Special motorised vehicles will be distributed to physically challenged (Divyang) students currently pursuing their Intermediate education.

5. An allocation of Rs 100 crore has been made specifically for the modernisation of kitchens in government hostels and Gurukul educational institutions.

6. Fifteen new industry-oriented courses will be introduced in polytechnic colleges starting from the 2026-27 academic year.

7. Osmania University has been granted a massive allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for the development of modern infrastructure and facilities.

8. The government has earmarked Rs 400 crore for the development of the Veeranari Chakali Ailamma Women’s University.

9. Trainees undergoing skill development at Advanced Technology Centres (ATCs) will now receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 2,000 from the government.
